About Loreosophy

Loreosophy is my pocket philosophy, a compass for navigating strange and confusing times. The name reflects this philosophy’s emphasis on story and imagination. It is a philosophy not for abstract theorizing, but for living. There are ten principles and ten practices; the principles are variants of the Ten Lamps, a philosophy conjured up by Simeon Mackenzie, protagonist and narrator of my novel Heartlander.

Loreosophy works as what I call depth philosophy: an inquiry into the philosophical-metaphysical implications of the psychodynamics explored by depth psychology. Both Jung and Freud did a measure of philosophizing without calling it that. For example, much of what Jung wrote about the psychoid (a layer of being partaking of matter and mind but beyond both), synchronicity and “acausal orderedness,” and the relationship between mind and matter is clearly metaphysical despite his claims to be an empiricist. The same with a lot of what Freud called “metapsychology.”

Pierre Janet, probably the real founder of depth psychology, was also a philosopher, and up front about it.
